Royal Marines On the 28th October 1664 an Order-in-Council was issued calling for 1200 soldiers to be recruited for service in the Fleet, to be known as the Duke of York and Albany's Maritime Regiment of Foot. As the Duke of York was The Lord High Admiral, it became known as the Admiral's Regiment. The Regiment was paid by the Admiralty, it and its successors being the only long service troops in the 17th and 18th century navy. For more information Click Here.

3 Commando Brigade Air Squadron
This Zippo is dated 1987. 3 Commando Brigade is a commando formation of the British Armed Forces and the main manoeuvre formation of the Royal Marines. Its personnel are predominantly Royal Marines, supported by units of Royal Engineers, Royal Artillery, The Rifles, and the Fleet Air Arm, together with other Commando Qualified Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen.
The brigade was formed in 1943, during the Second World War with a mixture of army commando and Royal Marine commando units and served in the Burma Campaign. After the Second World War the army commandos were disbanded and the brigade became a Royal Marine formation. Recently the Brigade has again became a mixed army and marine formation with the addition of an army infantry battalion, artillery regiment and engineer regiment alongside three Royal Marine battalions and support services.

This Zippo is dated 1981. In 1980 3RSRM was raised specifically for anti-illegal immigrants operations in Hong Kong and was disbanded in 1988.
Commando Logistic Regiment - Royal Marines
This Zippo is dated 1994. Commando Logistic Regiment Royal Marines (CLR RM) is situated at Chivenor
in North Devon. It is home to about 620 personnel from all three
services, including Mechanical Engineers, Medics and Logisticians. No
other unit has such an eclectic mix of cap badges working together. The
Regiment’s purpose is to provide every aspect of combat service support
for 3 Commando Brigade,
anywhere in the world. In particular the Regiment’s aims are to provide
support for brigade amphibious operations when sea based, during

Royal Marines 40 Commando
This Zippo is dated 1979. Formed in 1942, from A Commando, 40 Commando was the first RM Commando Unit. It saw early action during the raid on Dieppe in August of that year. From 1943 to 1945 the Commando was involved in the Italian Campaign, at Termoli, Lake Comacchio and subsequently in Yugoslavia. For its decisive action the Commando was awarded the Termoli battle honour.
Currently the Commando is preparing to deploy to the Helmand Province of Afghanistan under the command of Lt Col S Birrell where it will continue the work of British forces and our multi-national partners to stabilise the country.
No 41 Commando was formed on 10 October 1942 from the 8th Royal Marine Battalion on the Isle of Wight. They served at Salerno, the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of Walcheren Causeway as part of 4 Special Service Brigade until being disbanded in 1945. 41 (Independent) Commando During the Korean War 41 Commando was reconstituted as 41 (Independent) Commando following a request from the United Nations Command for more amphibious raiding forces. In 1960 41 Commando was reformed as part of the United Kingdom's Strategic Reserve. The Commando served in various places throughout the world including two tours of duty in Northern Ireland. Royal Marines 45 Commando
This Zippo Lighter is dated 1978. 45 Commando Royal Marines was formed in August 1943, and played its part
to the full throughout the remainder of World War II. This included the
D-Day landings in Normandy, the subsequent fighting through Holland and
thereafter the crossings of the Rhine, Weser and Elbe rivers. Throughout the 1970s at the height of the Cold War, the Commando honed
its new mountain and cold weather warfare skills for its role to
defending Norway and NATO's northern flank. Amphibious exercises north
of the Arctic Circle were interspersed throughout the 70s and 80s with

Royal Marines 45 Commando
This Zippo is dated 1991. In the post-Cold War era of the 1990s the unit saw no reduction in
operational tempo. In 1991 it deployed to Northern Iraq on a
humanitarian assistance mission to provide a safe haven for the Kurdish
people, and in 1994 it was dispatched to reinforce the Kuwaiti border
against renewed Iraqi aggression.
